Best Dog Breeds For Flats And Small Homes

A lot of people think that in order to have a dog you need a big space, and while this is true for some breeds like Golden Retrievers or Huskies, it’s not the case for every dog. Some breeds of dogs are perfectly suited for a life in a small house or a flat, with periodic walks and some trips to the nearest park of course.

Here are some of our favourite flat dog breeds:

Bichon Frise

These fluffy white dogs love to be close to people, so they are happy with sharing small spaces. They are snuggly and small, so they won’t occupy too much space on the couch.

This breed is barky though, so may not be the best for places with thin walls, and they are prone to separation anxiety, so probably not for you if you spend most of your days away from home.

French Bulldog

One of the most popular breeds at the moment. Frenchies are small, quiet and a bit lazy by nature.

They don’t need too much exercise either, so two brisk walks a day are enough to keep them in top shape.

Greyhound

It may sound contra-intuitive for most people, given that this breed is known for its speed, but the fastest breed it’s also one of the laziest. Greyhounds are couch potatoes at heart and like to lounge most of the day.

Take them to the park for a short exercise session and you’ll have a very sleepy boy or girl in your hands for the rest of the day.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

These small dogs (generally weighing between 6 and 8 kilos) are as smart as they come. They are very playful and enjoy a good exercising session, but they aren’t too high-energy, so you can keep them happy with short playtimes.

They love being with people, so they are definitely not kennel dogs, but they are good with staying alone for moderate amounts of time.

Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are extremely playful and love being around humans. They don’t require too much exercise and, because of their size, even small rooms will look like a castle to them. They may be a bit too barky for a thin wall apartment though.

If you are interested in Chihuahuas, Over Glam partnered with Dizzy Chihuahua Rescue, a charity that helps Chihuahuas to find a loving forever home. You can check out their website to see if they have the perfect furry friend waiting for you.
